At the core of Guruji’s teaching are these four words: Faith, Surrender, Love and Devotion. There is hardly a satsang in which Guruji does not tell us of the importance of these four words. These are the four words that define the Yoga of Devotion.
First is Faith. One must have faith in God, faith in Guru and faith in the spiritual texts. Absolute faith is the key to moving forward in life. In faith one moves freely through their life knowing that God is in control. Come what may, keep your faith that even when you do not understand, even when it might hurt and even when you are soaring in life. Having even the smallest of doubts can destroy the flow of your life and cause you not to follow instructions. We are limitless beings trapped only by our own doubts.
Second is Surrender. What is surrender? It is turning over your desired and perceived control of your life to God, and thus Guru. When you surrender to the Guru, He or She takes on the responsibility of your Spiritual growth. He takes on your store of karma and teaches you to do only Nishkam karma. Surrendering allows the Guru to cushion you as Prarabdha karma is expiated, but you must surrender so that He can take the control. When your Guru is in control you will be moved to perform your swadharma and His universe will work with you to succeed in that. When you follow His word and accept the outcome without question, you have surrendered.
Third is Love. Not just any love, but unconditional love. Unconditional means that there are no expectations at all. No motives or desires, just love. This is where your heart expands and becomes limitless. When you love everyone (not just only your acquaintances, friends and family) as God without wanting anything in return, you are practicing unconditional love. Love must not waiver and should not be withdrawn. Love cannot be used as a leveraging or bargaining tool. Even at a time when you feel that you are not loved, try to give your love to God.
Fourth is Devotion. Single pointed devotion to God or Guru. Developing focused devotion is what will bring you to God. It is upsetting to those people around you when they come to know that you have chosen to direct your devotion to God. Hardly any family members will accept that God is your one and only, but don’t be afraid. Each being is responsible for him or herself. Devotion to other beings does not bring you closer to God. It is only single pointed devotion and service to God or Guru which brings you closer.
